Examples of how Unity Harbour wants to help

As we embark on our journey to establish Unity Harbour, we are filled with hope and determination to create a sanctuary for those in need. While our doors may not be open yet, our vision is clear: to empower individuals and families facing adversity through comprehensive support and compassionate care. Today, we want to share our aspirations and the stories of the individuals we hope to serve:

1. Alex's Journey to Healing

Alex* is a single parent struggling to make ends meet after losing their job due to unforeseen circumstances. With limited resources and no support system, Alex and their two children are on the brink of homelessness, living in week by week motels, but the bills are more than the budget. At Unity Harbour, we envision providing Alex with not only a safe place to stay but also access to job training programs, childcare services, and financial assistance. By addressing the root causes of their hardship and offering holistic support, we aim to help Alex regain stability and rebuild their life with dignity.

2. Maria's Courageous Decision

Maria* is a young woman facing an unplanned pregnancy and feeling overwhelmed by the uncertainty of her situation. As she navigates her options, Maria encounters numerous barriers to accessing reproductive healthcare, including financial constraints and lack of support. She needs to keep working from home but also be able to get healthcare. At Unity Harbour, we envision offering Maria a compassionate and nonjudgmental space where she can receive comprehensive reproductive healthcare services, including counseling, contraception, and abortion care. By providing Maria with the support and resources she needs, we hope to empower her to make informed decisions about her body and her future.

3. Billy's Quest for Identity

Billy* is a transgender individual struggling to access gender-affirming care due to financial barriers and lack of resources. Feeling isolated and misunderstood, Billy longs for the opportunity to undergo gender-affirming surgery and receive the support and affirmation he deserves. At Unity Harbour, we envision providing Billy with access to gender-affirming care services, including hormone therapy, counseling, and surgical procedures. By affirming Billy's identity and providing him with the resources he needs to transition safely, we hope to empower him to live authentically and proudly. Not being forced to be sent home after a day with no mental health support except a telehealth hotline.

4. The Smith Family's Fight for Survival

The Smith family consists of a single mother, Sarah*, and her two young children, who have been struggling to find stable housing after fleeing an abusive relationship. With limited options and nowhere else to turn, Sarah and her children are facing the harsh reality of homelessness. They tried to stay with a friend but Sarah was assaulted, resulting in an unwanted pregnancy.

At Unity Harbour, we envision offering the Smith family a safe and supportive environment where they can find refuge and access to vital resources, including housing assistance, counseling, abortion care, and childcare services. By providing the Smith family with the support they need, we hope to help them break the cycle of violence and build a brighter future for themselves.

5. Millie's last chance

Millie is an older woman who got pregnant from a man who she thought loved her but left her. Millie, facing a high-risk pregnancy in a red state, struggles to access the medical care she needs, let alone has the support to help her in her final month of pregnancy. Whether her pregnancy results in a newborn gift or a stillborn, she still needs care, and is a life flight away.

Unity Harbour aims to offer her and others like her a safe haven near essential medical services, providing comprehensive support including housing assistance, counseling, and access to high-risk pregnancy care. Our goal is to empower individuals like Millie to overcome adversity and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

These stories represent just a glimpse of the countless individuals and families we hope to serve at Unity Harbour. Together, we can build bridges of hope and transformation for those in need.
